THE CALLINGTON AND DISTRICT FOODBANK The launch of the above took place on Saturday, 29th October 2011. A large number of people came; photos were taken, reports appeared in the local press and Radio Cornwall gave us a mention. The Foodbank is being run through the Churches Together in Callington and is part of the Trussell Trust - a Christian Charity. It gives three days of emergency food to local individuals or families in crisis. Local professionals (e.g. Social Services, Midwives, Clergy, etc.) refer clients to the Foodbank using the voucher system. All food is tinned or packaged and must have a long shelf life. How it Works - Food is donated by local people and volunteers sort and pack this into boxes. We partner with front line professionals, who identify people in crisis and issue vouchers. On taking the voucher to the Foodbank Drop-in Centre people receive a warm welcome, a hot drink and their Emergency Food Box. In rural areas food boxes can be delivered. The volunteer will signpost the client to an agency which can help with the underlying cause of the crisis. The Callington Area - Previously the Callington area has been covered by The Liskeard and Looe Foodbank, last year delivering 60 boxes to this area. They have been much busier here this year. Volunteers - The Callington Foodbank is run entirely by volunteers, with a small committee made up of members of the four Callington Churches. Many volunteers have been trained to run the drop-in centre, held at The Mustard Seed Church Parlour from 2pm to 4pm Mondays' Wednesdays and Fridays. Others have enlisted (more required) to deliver food to rural areas; fund raisers are needed to raise money towards running costs (insurances, electricity, etc.) and collectors are needed for Supermarket collection days. |

Friday morning prayer & coffee
there is a prayer meeting at
10.00am with a short Communion Service at this time, on the the
first Friday of each month.
Why not come along and join
us? The format is very relaxed, consisting usually of a Bible
reading, leading to a brief discussion, followed by a time of open
prayer. You are as welcome to come and say nothing as to come
and participate actively - so why not give it a try? Then stay for
coffee, biscuits and a chat. |
Coffee is served after the morning service on the LAST Sunday of each month. It is hoped as many as are able will stay for a short while and continue the fellowship of the earlier part of the morning. |

The
Circuit meetings and Church Councils have agreed that the
churches in our circuit should become Fair Trade churches.
This means that we use fairly traded tea, coffee etc at all our
meetings, lunches, coffee mornings and other events. Callington
is trying to gain Fair Trade status, whereby a number of local
shops, businesses, community groups and churches use Fair Trade
products, which can be purchased at the Cornerstone shop in Fore
Street and the Co-op in New Road.
