SEEING CHANGE AS OPPORTUNITY?

If an opportunity unexpectedly comes our way to do something special or attend a prestigious event, would would we try to re-arrange our diary entries in order to accept the invitation?  I was in this very position myself a couple of weeks ago.  A friend's email asked if I'd like to have a free ticked to watch an Olympic football match in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on August 3rd 2012.  I can tell you that some provisional holiday ideas were soon re-arranged to accommodate plans for this 'once-in-a-life-time' opportunity!  A change in arrangements is likely to be welcomed by most people of there are clear potential benefits to be gained.  It would be hard, for example, to argue against the notion that changes in medicine, housing, communications and technology have all brought immense benefits to humanity.  Yet what is our usual reaction towards the prospect of change if there are no obvious advantages that seem forthcoming?

The changes that have taken place in our own compact Methodist Circuit have been enormous.  The last 25 hears have witnessed thirteen chapel closures, one chapel gained after a boundary re-organisation while a new build in the Tamar Valley replaced several existing village chapels in the area.  For some of our Church members, 2011 has marked all manner of changes due to significant events like house-moves, family losses, weddings, births, illness, new friendships and so forth.   Time does not stand still and some changes just have to be faced.

The New Year Plan (on our 'Sunday Services' page) signals change for some of our Preachers.  Hennie Gray leads a final service before the house move to Bristol where we pray she will continue to know of the Lord's blessing as she ministers in new locations.  A different work pattern has arrived for Michael Rose who is again able to lead worship in our churches, having concluded his role at sea with the Royal Navy for the present.  The Plan shows the start of a monthly evening service at Tamar Valley featuring contemporary worship while the 'united services' listed reflect a mutual desire for an increase in working and worshipping with our Anglican and other Christian friends around the Circuit.

As we celebrate another Christmas and New Year, we might recall the positive way that Mary and Joseph coped with the immense and unexpected changes in their plans for the future.  For the pregnant young lass from down-town Nazareth suddenly became the centre of unwanted attention.  What an awesome responsibility - to carry and nurture the baby Jesus.  Yet with God's Help, what an incredible part Mary played in God's divine rescue mission on earth!  Joseph's plans for a quiet, low-key wedding and the chance to build his reputation as the local carpenter were seemingly thrown into disarray by Mary's imminent motherhood and their hurried journey to Egypt, to escape Herod's murder squads.  But what an opportunity and privilege Joseph had in giving the youngster the parental love, care and discipline that we know all children need in their formative years.

Let's be honest about it.  Most of us are 'creatures of habit' and do not relish the prospect of change.  If we can view change less as a threat however, and more as a new opportunity to share in God's Work ... then what a difference it could make to our attitude in day-to-day living.  Perhaps a New Year's resolution might be that, with God's Help, we increasingly regard change as an opportunity to see God at work [Ephesians 3: 20-21]

May you witness God at work in your own life and in your community in 2012.

God bless - your friend Martyn
