| Guild & Women's Network | SMALL MATTERS ! ‘£1 Million Home Wrecked by £4 Paperweight!’ This was the remarkable verdict of fire investigators last month who were trying to understand how a Derbyshire Dales luxury home had caught fire with such devastating results. It seems that a small £4 glass paperweight left on a conservatory window was the culprit for this freak accident one hot afternoon. I was reminded last week of how small things can make a big difference when an important e-mail never arrived. It later transpired that the sender had put an ‘i’ instead a ‘y’ in my address … and as a result her message never found me! I daresay that a similar mistake in an address would not have mattered so much if a Royal Mail letter delivery had been involved. As every car driver knows, even the smallest mistakes or lapses in concentration can sometimes have huge or at worst … life threatening consequences. This theme of ‘small matters’ inspired some vivid New Testament pictures. James, in his letter for example, speaks of huge fires set off by a small spark; of large ships being steered with a small rudder and of the huge damage that can be done with a really small body part – the tongue [James 3: 4-9]. Yet small things matter, not just because of the potential damage that can at worst result. Small things also matter because of the good that can emerge! Perhaps, like myself, you were told as a youngster that if you looked after the pennies, the pounds would look after themselves. Sound advice in our present debt-ridden society … which makes the youthful disdain shown towards our brown, low-value coinage all the more regrettable. Jesus certainly did not despise the small. He once commended a widow for putting small copper coins into the offertory box [Mark 12: 41-44], welcomed the little children [Matt. 19: 13-15] and likened a little faith to a tiny mustard seed’s ability to later provide a nesting place for birds [Mark 4:30-32]. The lad who provided just 5 loaves and 2 fish for Jesus to bless [John 6: 1-14] discovered that even when just a little is offered for God’s service, enormous good can result! In the marketing world, there is wide recognition that little things can make a big difference. For it is often small things that provide a positive experience for shoppers and such happy people are more likely to become loyal customers. Think for a moment about little things that have sometimes made a big difference to your day. Witnessing a beautiful sunset or a vivid rainbow can be inspirational … though clearly beyond human control. Was there a small gesture of kindness from someone who loves you, a smile from a stranger or a thoughtful gesture from a friend? Did you feel pleased with the way a particular task was completed or laugh out loud when a funny comment was exchanged? I am convinced that just such small things matter … and that they matter to God. The little words we choose to say, the little kindnesses done, the little gestures of appreciation given and the little prayers we offer … all matter to God. Through the prophet Zechariah, God once asked his people: “Who despises the day of small things?” [Zech 4: 10]. May we, with God’s Help, never make such a mistake. For small does matter! 1 Corinthians Ch 10: verse 13
"Every
test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to
people. But God keeps His promise, and He will not allow you

put to the test He will give you the strength to endure it, and so
provide you with a way out."
